• HSK Level 3

    HSK Level 3 Syllabus

    HSK (level 3) is designed to assess the ability of an individual to use and understand the Chinese language. HSK (level 3) is equivalent to B1 of The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF) and Level 3 of the International Chinese Competence Standard. Learners who have attained HSK-Level 3 can complete basic communication tasks in daily life, study and work. When visiting China, Level 3 learners can handle most communication tasks they encounter.

    .Objectives

    HSK (level 3) is designed for learners who have taken 2-3 lessons each week for three semesters (one year and a half). Examinees should have grasped 600 of the most commonly used phrases and their related grammar.


    .Content

    HSK (level 3) is in three parts (Listening, Reading, and Writing) and contains 80 test items in total.

    The total time is approximately 90 minutes (5 minutes for filling in personal details inclusive).


    1. Listening

    Part 1 (10 items). Examinees listen to each item twice. There is one dialogue for each item. Examinees select the appropriate picture from a range of choices according to what they hear.

    Part 2 (10 items). Examinees listen to each item twice. In each item, one person speaks several sentences, followed by a second who utters one sentence which is also provided on the paper. Examinees indicate whether it is true or not according to what they hear.

    Part 3 (10 items). Examinees listen to each item twice. In each item, there is one dialogue between two persons, each speaking two sentences. A third person asks a question related to the dialogue. Examinees choose the best response from three possible answers.

    Part 4 (10 items). Examinees listen to each item twice. In each item, there is one dialogue between two persons, each speaking two sentences. A third person asks a question related to the dialogue. Three pictures are on the paper. Examinees choose their answer according to what they hear.

    2.  Reading

    Part 1 (10 items). There is one dialogue in each item. Several pictures are on the paper. Examinees choose the one that matches the dialogue.

    Part 2 (10 items). There is one picture and three statements in each item. Examinees choose the one that matches the picture.

    Part 3 (10 items). There is one question and three answers in each item. Examinees choose the correct answer to the question.

    3. Writing

    Part 1 (5 items). There are several phrases in each item. Examinees make a sentence according to the phrases listed.

    Part 2 (5 items). There is a sentence with a blank in each item. Examinees fill the correct Chinese characters into the blank.


    .Test Score Reports

    Test score report includes listening, reading, writing and total scores. A score of 180 or more represents a pass.

    HSK scores used for applications to Chinese Institutions of higher learning are valid for 2 years from the test date. Longer periods of validity may be recognized in other contexts.
